The National Institute of Engineering (NIE) was started in the year 1946 with admission only to a diploma course in Civil Engineering.
The first batch of 86 students answered their attendance call sitting in a rustic room with thatched roof in Laxmipuram. Later, the classes were held in a temporary shed in the Sharada Vilas High School campus. However, the untiring efforts of the retired senior engineer trio, Sri. S.Ramaswamy, Sri.D.V.Narasimha Rao and Sri.T.Ramarao, the NIE founders, gave fruition when the NIE was securely established by 1950 with its own class rooms and workshops on a sprawling 6-acre land in Mysore South.
The students, who were preparing for AMIE in Civil Engineering (NIE had started AMIE also in 1948 for intermediate - passed students), were permitted to change over to the regular degree course leading to B.E. Degree in Civil Engineering of the Mysore University. Thus, NIE became the second Engineering College in the state and the first in Mysore. Later, the first batch of students in Civil Engineering graduated in 1953 from the portals of NIE. Progress of the Institute was so rapid that in 1956 the State and Union Governments recognised NIE as one of the institutions listed for development during the second and subsequent five-year plans. In 1958-59, NIE got private-aided institution status under grand-in-aid code of Karnataka Government.
Present Status
Today, NIE is one of the premier institutions in the country offering B.E. degree in Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Information Science, Electrical, Electronics, Industrial & Production, and Mechanical Engineering.
It is also offering part-time B.E.(Evening Course) for practicing Civil Engineering Diploma holders.
NIE also offers Master's Degree in Hydraulics, Power Systems, Production Engineering & System Technology, Computer Applications to Industrial Drives, Computer Applications (MCA) and Engineering Management.
NIE is a recognised research institution under Visveshwaraiah Technological University and offers Doctoral Programmes in specialised areas in Civil, Electrical, Computer Science, Mechanical and Industrial Production Engineering.
Besides establishing various Centers such as the Center for Appropriate Rural Technology, Entrepreneurship Development Cell, NIE has also set up state-of-art laboratories such as Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Laboratory, Solar Energy Laboratory, Remote Sensing Laboratory and Instrumentation Cell. The Institute is contributing a great deal by developing relevant manpower for the industrial and research organisations in the country.
Since its inception, the Institute's objective has been to train young and deserving boys and girls thoroughly so that they not only turn out to be consummate engineers but also make worthy contribution to the technological progress of the country. In fact, the NIE alumni have occupied high positions in educational institutes like IITs, IISc, and IIM, national research laboratories and in major industrial units in India and abroad. Some of the alumni have become very successful entrepreneurs.
